Clothes Matter (Matthew 22:11-4)

In today’s world people are overly concerned with the latest fashions. From school age children to the elderly, most people want to be fashionably dressed. Although some can not afford to spend a fortune on these clothes, they try to at least have something which makes them appear to be current.

There are other people who are not trendsetters nor care to be. As long as they are clean and appropriately dressed they are satisfied and all is well with the world.

Now when it comes to special occasions, we make an attempt to put our best foot forward. This may call for us to put our nickels and dimes together and purchase a new outfit. We don’t want to be seen in yesterday’s garment, which has been worn several times before. It has to be something fresh.

For some occasions, the host does not focus on the invitee's attire. They are pleased that you have agreed to come and welcome you with open arms.

In Matthew 22, where Jesus tells a parable about a wedding banquet, the apparel is mentioned. The man who attends the banquet is not dressed in celebratory fashion. He enters in street clothes.

The king, who has extended the invitation, inquires as to why  this man is not dressed in the appropriate attire. Surely he knows that he does not attend a function of this nature inadequately dressed. Surely he knows you do not come before the king underdressed. Surely he knows per chance that he will be noticed among the attendees and stick out like a sore thumb. Surely he knows better.

The real matter in this instance is not the clothing of the body, but the clothing of mind and spirit. God, the king, has called us to the royal banquet where the feast of the Lord is going on. Your invitation is that of salvation and this is your entrance into the feast. Your dress must be the whole armor of God.

His armor consists of the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, sword of the spirit, the belt of truth and be shod with the preparation of the Gospel.

These are the rules of engagement, but you have to adhere to the rules. You don’t get to set your own rules. You don’t get to write your own invitation. You get to be a participant only if you are dressed for the occasion.

Clothes matter. Make sure you are dressed for the occasion.
